Lost dreams

As the celebrations are starting to take off for the fortieth anniversary of men landing on the moon and as I approach my fiftieth birthday I wonder if I am alone in thinking my generation has been cheated of our inheritance. What I mean is that as a ten year old watching Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon I was convinced that we would have been to Mars, had colonies on the moon and had hotels in space by now. We should be driving around in electric hover cars that never need refueling and no-one should need to work as robots do our every bidding. I have to ask myself what went wrong? Maybe if JFK had not been assasinated things would have been different or if NASA had understood the meaning of quality control they would have got more funding and at least some of my expectations would have come true. I wonder will my grandchildren see the future I expected or will it be my grandchildren's grandchildren?
